Industry Report week2
Producer
For this particular written assignment, I decided to choose the producer career as a choice to pursue from the three provided. I chose being a producer because of the multi-tasking and general knowledge of all aspects of music production is entailed. For example, we can start out by saying that the producer’s main goal is to carry out the ‘vision’ the artist wants to place on his CD or music. I got the information from a reading in our other class which helped me guide through some understandings of being a producer. I think allowing an artist’s idea to be placed into an audible form is a tough and probably the most difficult job you can have since every artist has its ‘personality’ and his or her artistic talent. The book, “Careers in Audio” by Jeff Touzeau states that being a producer means you are your own boss. You carry the team from point A to point B. For example, you have to hire the people that can help you with the technicalities of the audio recording and at the same time, deal with payrolls and expenses of you production. Simply put, you are the operator of a business and you have to do everything related to it. In addition to the operation, you must have the skill and talent to ‘hear’ the music as well as ‘understand’ the musician. The hearing aspect is the quality of the music or the tone of the music overall. The artist may want to create certain pitch and sound to his songs the producer must learn to carry out. The understanding part is the editing part of the music. It is beyond just the technical skills and technology that provides the music; it is the phrasing, the delivery, and the art of the music according to Touzeau. The aptitude of the production capabilities must be there to carry the production to finish. In addition to the aptitudeness of being a producer, you have to learn and understand the functionality of being an engineer and an editor since you will be working with two fields to create the sound your client want as a producer. You have to create the quality of signal chain, microphone selection, and mixdowns in addition to your own task as engineers are hired to specialize in those categories. As for editing, the producer must learn the ‘mixes’ and ‘masters’ of the production. The producer understands that the editor has great influence over the flow of the music and the producer must be able to communicate well with the editor. There really is no entry-level of being a producer, but there is a level of gaining experience in every field of music industry. What I mean by that is that you can’t just work in one field, you have to a well-rounded person and In order to do that, you must start in every entry-level known to audio industry.
I think the pros are that you are your own boss and that you have the power over many aspects of the business. But the cons are you must be a well experienced editor, engineer, and a smart businessman in order to be a proficient producer. I personally think being a producer is a well-respectable field you can get into after many years of experience in the music industry. The talent is that you have to have ‘ear’ for music according to author Touzeau. I think I can make that happen because of my consistency with my current work that I have been doing for almost ten years.
Industry Report 2 - music promoter
ReplyDelete1. The name and brief description of the career option. Music promoter - a person who publicize the artist and concerts by putting up posters flyers and sometimes commericals. Arrange shows for the artist.
2. A summary of the pros and cons, personal traits necessary for success, entry-level requirements, etc.
Pros traits - the lime light, around artist, free shows, meeting new people. Exposure to other up and coming artist. Travel to different cities. Meeting the press. And the attitude of "I put made this happen".
Cons - tired, sleepless nights, not able to have a family life, traveling(not able to be home). The band or person doesn't want to peform. The negotiation of fees. The venues not being availible for a certain date.
I think as personal traits for this career would have to be first, self motovator. A person who does not someone else telling them what to do. Secondly, a person with a vision and the will to make it come to pass. Thirdly, a people person who knows how to multi tasks in the areas of negotiating, finances, lingo, booking, and knowledgable of aspects promoting and time management.
3. An examination of whether or not this career is a good fit.
This career is definitely not for me.It requires to much time and stress. I am a people person but I hate being talked to like a kid. Negotitating is not one of my skills. Being a promoter does take a certain skill and charactertics traits thats able to multi tasks and manipulate to get things done

Producer
A producer is an individual working within the music industry, whose job is to oversee and manage the recording of an artist's music. A producer has many roles that include gathering ideas for the project, selecting songs, coaching the musicians in the studio, controlling the recording sessions, and supervising the entire process through mixing and mastering. Some even manage the budget, schedules, and negotiations.
The pros of being a producer are being the boss. It a position that has a little bit of everything, you hire, record, mix, and master. If you can multitask then you’ll producing. The con of being a producer is the multitasking. You’ll have a lot to manage. Depending on the size of the project, it could be a stressful job.
This is a career I would be interested in. Some say a producer can be compared to a film director. A producer's job is to create, shape, and mold a piece of music. It’s the same thing a director dose except they do it in film. And film is another thing I am interested.

Producer
1. The name and brief description of the career option.
A Producer is the person who leads the artists to their goal. Whether it's to get a certain sound or to get the CD done in the first place but mainly makes sure everything goes as planned and even masters out the music and lays out the vision of the artist.
2. A summary of the pros and cons, personal traits necessary for success, entry-level requirements, etc.
The Pro's of a Producer profession include leading, the time and still being artistic at the same time. It's as if you've been given tools and an object and asked to make something of it or to fix it to make it the best it's ever been or could be.
The Con's include the chance of dealing with "pre-madonna's" and the stress of managing them and the song itself to make sure the clock doesn't Beat you at your personal life. Most of the time, you won't have much to work with and yet, you have to perform miracles or magic.
3. An examination of whether or not this career is a good fit.
I feel this would be a career I could do for the main reasons that I know how to talk to people and manage/run bands. In addition to that, I'm also patient and already have experience in this point of interest.

Music Promoter/Agent
A person in charge of Business and Marketing for a specific nightclub or pulls events together such as: Raves, Hip Hop Battle Nights, and many others. Supports the Artist at shows/concerts and sells there cds, tickets, and merchandise.
A summary of the pros and cons, personal traits necessary for success, entry-level requirements, etc.:
Pros:
I believe that when it comes being a Music Promoter/Agent your mostly on a contract to show that you promote what's coming up for the entertainment marketing venue. You get paid for even getting people to show up and guaranteed a sale for each person who buys merchandise from you or even Sales from the people buying foods and drinks from the venue and/or special event.
Cons:
It can be very stressful in life to be running around and trying to get people to attend an event. Because once your on a contract you have to be committed to doing what you love. You can't just do it for the money and fame. Your willing to try hard to keep your chin up even though everyone is giving you hard time on it by not being able to go and or when the event is canceled just going through the process is hard enough as it is.
An examination of whether or not this career is a good fit.
It is a good fit for me because since I have very good knowledge of Performing Artists coming to town and having them to play at the venue I know who to tell, where to show it, and how the poster's/fliers should be when placed in areas that bring a lot of attention.

Industry Report
For the following essay I will be talking about the musician branch of the audio production industry. I personally would prefer to follow this branch of the industry for many reasons. The musician branch allows for musicians to express their music and allows them to work in a no pressure environment. Unlike big record labels, being an independent musician allows you to work on your own time. The musician branch also is one of the most competitive. There is a lot of good artist out there which also pursue the same dream. This is one of the downsides to being an independent musician.
There are many pros and cons to being a musician these days. There has been a lot of technological advancements in the industry allowing for artist to develop much easier than ever before. Things such as the internet and websites like MySpace allow artist to reach audiences that without the web would never hear their music. The musician industry has never been easier to produce tracks. This is because of things such as home studios. In the past the use of a big studio was necessary in order to produce a good sounding track. Some of the cons of being a musician is that you need to have some skill of music. This will allow you to be superior to your competition.
I believe that I will be able to be successful in this career because I know a good amount about music. I am able to play guitar at a proficient level, drums and piano(keyboard) at good level. I am also experienced with production software such as Pro Tools, Fruity Loops, and Cubase. So in conclusion I think if I learn a little more about Pro Tools I can be a successful musician.
Industry Report #2: Musician/Songwriter/Producer/Agent
ReplyDeletePros of musician- You can make a name for yourself and go for the gold. Tour the world and play for many artist and record as well.
Cons- Trading time for money just doesn’t add up. If Doctors suddenly starting making only 40k/yr, I wouldn’t spend my time on ten years of education just to get into the field. Time away from home and on the road is only fun for a while, but it has its many stresses. It also is another cost to travel and sometimes it doesn’t add up.
Pros of Songwriters- They make money no matter who sings their songs. They become a go to person for good material or calab with other writers in the industry. Writers seem to bond with other writers better than musicians who just perform live instrumentation. If your music makes it big, it could be around for years.
Cons- Its hard to shop it around especially to the artist who are or are on their way to being mainstream. If your music does make it there, you may not get the recognition you deserve but who cares as long as you get paid. Who hears good reports or bad reports about you matters, your reputation is never safe.
Pros for Producer – you’re getting to work with all walks of life and genre. its like making a recipe using the best of ingredients. You make a name for yourself and doors may open in more than one area of production.
Cons- Your recipe for success can easily be a recipe for disaster. Its hard getting the right talent you may in vision even if the recipe calls for a certain talent or level of professionalism. Sometimes you get the sugar with spice, sometimes just the sugar without the spice…Publicity and marketing a client is the biggest issue so be careful of what you may promise a client or just don’t make any promises at all.
Pros for Agent- I’m not too sure about this one. I can only say that the pros would be more success would equal more money and better publicity to draw a bigger customer base.
Cons-the trust factor and loyalty to those whom you’ve helped may walk out on you causing you to lose more money and create a bad reputation for you only at your expense. The risks are greater but the reward is far more than that I guess.
Each of these will has its own heaping spoon of trouble to digest at some point. It really comes down to passion for the artist or the songwriter’s music, or what the underlined message is in the song that will help inspire and producer or agent to back you.
