What makes great game sound by George Spanos
    1. Identify the article you have selected and why you chose it.
The Article is "what makes great game sound. I chose this article because I am not a interested in games, but as an audio student I can branch out and learn how to make sounds for video games to coinside with music that could be used for games.

    2. What are the main points of the essay?
One of the main points in the articles is to have a great theme sound wise. Without it, the game will not be appealing and it will limited in the market as in sales. Sound go hand in hand with the story of the game. Sound exist to help with the story line. Sound makes the gamer believe that everything in the story line exist or seem real.

    3. Did the article convince you one way or the other about the feasibility of a career in this field? Please explain.
It convince me totally, because it made see the importance of good sound design for the game industry. Without sound it would not appealing or marketable. Sound brings life to the game. No matter how good the story line is, No sound good with it, it becomes limited. So i would definitly like to learn more about this field.

The Role of an Audio Director In Video Games
I chose the article “The Role of an Audio Director In Video Games” by Rob Bridgett. This article was interesting to be because it talks about being an audio director in video games. This is something that I am interested in doing except in film.

The article starts by describing what an audio director does. They do what a sound designer does in film. They do everything from dialogue, ambience, sound effects and music. They also work with the audio programmers and art team in leading feature design. It’s a very complex position that has changed in that 10 years. Many audio directors just had to mix a few elements to make a gun shot. Now with games so advanced, they now have to take a gun a part study its parts and the environment it being shot it to make the right sound.

This is a career I would like to do. Whether it’s in video games or film, be a audio director or designer is something I would like to do even though it’s a complex and time consuming job.

    Silence In Sound Design

In the artcie, Silence In Sound Design, by George Spanos, he describes the use of ‘silence’ in sound as a way to provide emotion into the gaming, music, and the video world. He talks about how slight use of noise or very minimal use of sound can provide emotional effect on viewers or listeners. For example, He uses the idea of a first game shooter where the player can be flashbanged to think that he is being blinded or even alerted into believing that the ‘player’ must react immediately in order to survive. In another example, George Spanos provides the example from a movie scene from ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ a story of a heroic soldier during World War II and how the use of ‘silent’ sound caused the audience to believe that soldiers inside the boat were getting shot even though it didn’t create a loud and war-like scenery but at the same time managed to make the viewers believe that they were being shot at.
Some of the techniques use in ‘silent’ sounding is the way of flashbang causes a ‘muted’ sound of complete silence even though that silent sound is still created. Another example of how silent sound is created or used is the way in which a gamer is playing a hero that goes through scary dark tunnel and hears silent screams and ambient sounds that allows the player to experience ‘fear.’
Overall, the author believes that sound designers and engineers and its use of ‘silent’ sound is a great conveyance tool for the human interaction with the entertainment world when there is no sense of touch and feel.
I chose this article because it seemed interesting compare to the other article. I play games occassionaly and I always wondered how the engineers or game designers always allowed us to get hooked to our chair and play the games hours on end. Their way of producing ‘silent’ sound is definitely one of the reasons why I play their games hours on end.
I do not see myself contributing in this industry although it seems very interesting. I would like to still focus on music as my main source of career to the music industry.

    1. The article I chose was Sharing Your Skills in Game Audio-game sound design. I chose this article for the reason that it sounded most interesting in how my audio skills can be applied to video games. The title pretty much grabbed my attention.

    2. I believe the main points of the essay are positive and common. They're just saying to be nice and help out as much as you can. Has a "what comes around" feel. So, if you do good, good will come back. It says to help out and maybe more collaborations will come to be and how the gaming industry is kind from neighbor to neighbor, usually at least. And there are more opportunities to meet other audio game producers. Just an encouragement to get involved.

    3. The article somewhat convinced me but not that much. It didn't give much proof or examples other than another article stating to help others as you'd like to be helped. Although a kind and touching article, not very convincing, in my opinion. However, it was still a good article.

  6. 1. I decided to write about "Silence In Sound Design". The reason i chose this because it grabbed my attention and is the complete opposite of what i think of sound design. I always thought that you absolutely need a soundtrack or else i didn't do my job right. But this article has made me think and realize how many games use this technique to create tension.

2.The main point in this essay is that sound designer need to use silence instead of overusing sound in their work. This technique will make players concentrate on their screen in order that they can be more involved. This also creates a lot of tension in games that will make that big surprise that much better. The author points out that when we over use sound it makes the gamer not concentrate as much. This will lure them away from what the developer worked hard to get across.

3.The author got many points across to me through this article. I don't think it really affected the feasibility of the industry. This essay just makes it so you have some good advice if you do decide to go into this industry so that you have an easier time working with the game designers.

    1. Identify the article you have selected and why you chose it.
The article I chose was "A Brief Timeline Of Video Game Music". I chose it because I LOVE the roots of video game music to the new sound we're getting today. I also LOVE making 8 bit chiptunes to todays suspenseful movie scores that are now in video games.

    2. What are the main points of the essay?
The main points of the essay are that music plays a deep role in the video game industry. Starting from 8 bit, expanding to 16 and 32 and growing and expanding to 24-channel sound chips to 128 and just growing still today! The games strategies being used like rising tempo's, ambient noises and catchy tunes, all still being used today and progressing and yet still playing a massive, important role

    3. Did the article convince you one way or the other about the feasibility of a career in this field? Please explain.
It convinced me the main points. Undebateable, the points are proven. I never really noticed or paid attention at times to see how the music kept my pulse racing and kept me begging for more or kept me at the edge of my seat or kept me interested in the game in general. Good stuff.

    Reflection 4

    1. Identify the article you have selected and why you chose it.
Say So Long to an Old Companion: Cassette Tapes – I used to be a tape cassette lover and wondered why they were in decline.
    2. What are the main points of the essay?
Tapes have pros and cons, pros- you could pick up where you left of, cons- they would begin to hiss or could melt.
Tapes were great for mix tapes and recording with hand held devices at meetings and such. They were good for the audiobook industry.
The digital music sales have basically killed the tape industry because it allows to consumer to build its own library and access all of it at even given time, ex. ipod
    3. Did the article convince you one way or the other about the feasibility of a career in this field? Please explain.
I would not choose to have in career in a field which is on its away out the door. Sales are in decline which would basically mean jobs are in decline. Plus who’s gonna by a tape cassette these days, cd’s are already on their way out the door!
