    Sound Design of Terminator 2

I chose “Sound Design of Terminator 2” because Terminator 2 is one of my favorite movies and I’m always curious about how they mixed the sound the movie. This article had a lot of interesting information. It was very interesting to read.

The main points of this article are how director James Cameron wanted all the sounds in the movie to bigger than big. The liquid metal sound was made by taking a violin string bow and sliding it across different pieces of metal. The bullets hitting the liquid metal was made by slamming an inverted glass into a bucket of yoghurt. The sound of the crushed skull in the opening scene is actually a pistachio being crunched by a metal plate. 70% of the dialogue and most of the breathing is ADR (Automatic Dialog Replacement).

Yes, since I already have an interest in this field, the article still help convince me. You have to be really creative in this field, but if you love it you won’t have any problem. I love movies so this is something I want to do.

    1. Identify the article you have selected and why you chose it.

Martin, W. Eric. "IP Foley Artist: A Day in the Life of an Independent Professional." I chose this article besides the fact I would love doing Foley, was because maybe there might be something in here that as has to do with what I need to know and learn on day to day how everything runs and goes in the environment.

    2. What are the main points of the essay?

Starting out from how DuPilka got into the industry and where he went from there to being the one who went to school and then to having connections to standing out from an interview to also interning as well because there are many others who want the same. What its like and what to expect in the studio. Then on towards to having experience in many aspects in the field of Sound Production.

    3. Did the article convince you one way or the other about the feasibility of a career in this field? Please explain.

Yes! I love Foley! and to be doing this as a career in the future will be a goal for me. You basically need to strive your way to being in the Movie Sound Industry and it does take a lot to be in whatever you want to do but they mostly want to see what you can really do!

    Week 8, Reading Reflection

    Week 8 Reading Reflections

    1. Identify the article you have selected and why you chose it.

Rydstrom, Gary. "Sound Design of Terminator 2."

    2. What are the main points of the essay?

The main point of the essay was written to describe the extent of work Mr. Gary Rydstrom went to justify his boss, James Cameron, the director and creator of Terminator 2, the movie, and what he did do to create the sound design and feel of the movie throughout the whole process of making the sound seem as realistic as possible to the listeners. For example, Mr. Rydstrom states, “Every sound effect in Terminator 2 had to sound like it was injected with testosterone.” What he means is that he had to find new creative ways to make listeners as well as the director believe that what they were watching was believable in terms of sound that it was creating. For example, he says that in order to create the sound for the transformation of t-1000, the antagonist of the movie, he went as deep as to take a violin bow and went through several different pieces of metallic items to create a very illuminating, ‘goopy mud’ feel to that effect. But for some reason, to Mr. Rydstrom, the perfectionist, it simply wasn’t enough, so he went through several tests using different types of items such as ‘Dust-Off into a flour and water mixture, with a condom-sealed mic stuck in the goo.’ He felt that it met the requirement due to the sound having a beginning and an end. The extreme level of capacity Mr. Rydstrom took to achieve such a sound was not only original but was not invented yet. It is beyond any normal human sense to create such a sound using a normal household object.

Mr. Rydstrom describes another scene in the movie where the enemy goes into a molten pit or transforming into a shape to a liquid form from a hot lava. In order to do that, Mr.Rydstrom describes it as, “the high sizzle of something hot and the liquidy goop of something you could splash. That was made by compressed air into a lot of mud, but there were also boiling sounds which have been pitched way down.” He is describing that the way compressed air mix with mud somehow created the sound he wanted. The sound he wanted to find was something huge and hot, he says and he was able to do that with compressed air and lots of mud. I think the author in this case is trying to state that a sound effect designer thinks first of the style of type of sound he wants to make, then he thinks of objects that can come close to creating that effect of a sound with normal items we buy at major markets. Then, he would apply manipulations to the products he purchase for a mixture of sound he is trying to achieve.

In order for you to become a sound effects designer, it takes a lot of work and talent. It is a skill that is not given to just anyone. And if someone was to have talent to create such sounds, it still requires a lot more then just talent, it requires many many years of experience and dedication to the project. He is a foley artist.

    3. Did the article convince you one way or the other about the feasibility of a career in this field? Please explain.

I think the article convince in one way only: how hard it is to become a sound effects designer and a foley artist. The knowledge and talent for sound he has is beyond any normal music lover I know. I will definitely stay away from this job.

    Week 8 Reading Reflection

    1. Identify the article you have selected and why you chose it.
The article I chose was the "Introduction to Film Sound". I chose this article because I wanted to see what this article had to say about the Film Sound Industry.

    2. What are the main points of the essay?
The main points of the essay are that the main movie elements in Film Sound are Human Voice, Music and Sound Effects. Then it explains the role of each element. Like how sound effects " contribute to the realism of film and also help to create a particular atmosphere" and how music " is used to add emotion and rhythm to a film" and also how The Human Voice "authenticates the speaker as an individual or a real person rather than the imaginary creation of a story teller".

    3. Did the article convince you one way or the other about the feasibility of a career in this field? Please explain.
I do agree with the article but don't believe that it can just be simply put in such an almost mediocre way. Although the article mentions all the roots in the three main elements, it fails to show the importance of the deeper roles in Film Sound. Doesn't even bother to name them but rather gives them their own paragraph and/or detail. But this is still a good, convincing article.

    1. I chose to d my reflection on "IP Foley Artist" by W. Eric Martin. This article seemed interesting to me because it involved Foley. Foley is one of the more interesting jobs in the in industry that i would consider as a job.

    2. The main points in this article are tips for getting a job as a Foley artist. The author shares his experiences in the industry and is quite amusing. He mentions how kissing scenes, are really the Foley artist slobbering all over his hand. And also that they hired a guy one time because he brought in some brownies along with his resume.

    3. This article definitely convinced me on how i can pursue a career in this industry. I would be excited to do some of the crazy stuff that these Foley artist do for a living.

    a. Lapels are tricky to work with. The more info micing and placement helps achieve a more cleaner and smoother session for recording . This also makes it more comfortable for the speaker /singer to perform better.
    b. Marketing yourself is a must these days and effects the life of career remarkably. I”d rather market myself and save money than to have a whole marketing campaign that generates more debt than increasing profit.
