‘Is the Music industry trying to kill the modern internet radio’ by Deren, Glenn
What are the main points of the essay?
The main point of the essay reflects on the modern way of casting radio through the internet as a tool to reach the music loving audience out there. To be more specific, one of the more well-known radio internet station we all know is www.pandora.com. The website that uses basic algorithms to allow users to chose the type of genre and categories of music the listener may want to listen to. The creator of Pandora, although a genius in his idea, has been facing many issues with the free-radio via internet where he has over 16 million registered users. It all started when typical radio programming was a money making business back in the 60s when DJ Alan, a radio show host, got paid to play certain song via radio for his listeners, which in turn, would be an advertisement for the record label. Since then, it has been illegal for a radio to accept money to play more of certain then others. Although broadcasting is legal, digital wise, it is illegal. Hence, Pandora has been facing issues with the technology it has created for millions of people. Pandora is digital and has to pay certain fee every time a certain song is played. Due to the millions of people, and millions of songs played each second, it is devastating that Pandora is somehow still in existence. The article is basically stating that since internet radio like Pandora, including other companies such as apple and Microsoft with ‘genius’ and ‘Zune,’ it is often faced with problems from recording companies like Sony, because they use to make more money selling CDs and now they are making pennies on the dollar by playing its songs on the radio. There are heavy amounts of lobbyist who is trying to raise the cost of song per play via radio and they are all hired by people who wants to, in the author’s opinion, shut radio webcasting by raising the cost of the song per play. In return, they think that, somehow they will reach out to people buying the actual song for 99 cents instead of making pennies by having it displayed on the radio.
Did the article convince you one way or the other about the feasibility of a career in this field? Please explain.
This is interesting in the way that it is so complicated. The politics involved and the lobbyists who actually try to provide and make everything into money. I hate politics but, I support Pandora as a consumer. I hope Pandora has its set of lobbyists to counter.

Confessions of an Audio Tech, Part 2

I choose “Confessions of an Audio Tech, Part 2: MythBusters: Baptism by Fire” by Matt Jepson. I picked this article because it is about one of my favorite TV shows.

The article was basically how Matt Jepson started working for the show. He tells some stories of how and where microphones were placed for certain experiments. He says that even though it a really fun job, it’s also a very demanding job. Since most experiments they do in the show can go wrong he always has be thinking about different scenarios and be prepared for anything.

This article did convince me a little about this career path, especially if it’s a show like MythBusters. It’s a job that always has you thinking in your feet.

Owen, Sharon - 10 Reasons Why Satellite Radio Rocks."

What are the main points of the essay?

Pin Points bringing out the main reasons why you should get Satellite Radio! Which are mostly because; More Channels (International, Local, Variety of Genre's), Never loses Signal (Driving Town to Town, in the Deserts), Hear or Listen anywhere (Home, Work, Car).

Did the article convince you one way or the other about the feasibility of a career in this field? Please explain.

I would love to be in outer space for like a week and that's all because I believe that is where Satellite Radio is being transmitted. Where else would it be anyways? I don't know... but I remember having it and it was cool until it went away. I would love to get Satellite Radio for me and mi Famillia once I graduate because I can't afford this shiznet. It is a pretty pricey B.A. Radio for the car.

    1. Identify the article you have selected and why you chose it.
The article I chose is "Is the Music Industry Trying to Kill Modern Internet Radio?". I chose this article because I often ask this question and want to see what others have to say on this topic to either support my theory or oppose it.

    2. What are the main points of the essay?
The main point of the article is that the industry is trying to kill radio, starting it off with the fact that iPods and Zunes both have a new feature allowing you to hear songs you don't have by the companies taking your tracks and comparing them to others. For example, if all you had was Beethoven, they'd suggest Mozart. But it also mentioned Pandora and how it almost does the same thing but with algorithmic comparisons on songs, using likes and dislikes. Then the article continues on to mention how a radio DJ got in trouble for being paid to play certain songs more than others by the industry. Then it just continues on to support the theory that the industry is trying to shut down internet radios.

    3. Did the article convince you one way or the other about the feasibility of a career in this field? Please explain.
It actually kept me going with my theory on this. I too believe the industry is fighting to control the radio and all its stations. I already believed this and know the radio is doomed and has reached it's downfall.

Is The Music Industry Trying to Kill The Modern Internet Radio? I read this article because it was very interesting topic This article talk about Pandora.com. If you havent heard about this radio, Its basically a free internet radio that plays music based on your preference of genre. Hence their slogan, " -Stations that play only music you like.

    2. This article was very informative in that i found out how bad internet radio is suffering. Pandora is The Music Genome Project in a user friendly interface. This was made in order to play similar songs together in order to create a whole new radio. This sounds like a break through idea, and it was, until you find out its problems. Back in the days, when radio first started off, The government decided that analog radio stations didn't have to pay royalty fees to the record label every time a song plays on the radio. Only analog radio has this benefits from this. Which means that every time you play a song on Pandora they have to pay a small fee to the record labels every time a song plays. Its less then a cent that they have to pay however when millions of users play songs 24/7 you will find that Pandora and other internet radio stations are in trouble. This makes it so that a free service is in trouble of perishing out of existence unfortunately. I love Pandora radio and it needs to be assisted in order so that iit can live on.

    3. This article made me realize how greedy some of the record labels are. I love music and Pandora always helped me discover new songs. Something needs to be done in order that Pandora lives on.

    1. Identify the article you have selected and why you chose it.
    a. Confessions of an Audio tech part II - I love myth busters
    2. What are the main points of the essay?
    a. Matt uses a new setup of two sound devices 302 mixers linked together and is able to dedicate and mix one channel and send it to the camera feed via wireless hop.
    b. He uses mics that have a good range with adjustable levels at both the receiver and the transmitter.
    c. Headphones are the most important- he owns a pair of high noise headphones to protect his ears and hear the mic at its cleanest and more direct sound. These headphones allow you to focus on just what the mic is picking up without the need to raise the sound in the headphone to dangerous levels.
    3. Did the article convince you one way or the other about the feasibility of a career in this field? Please explain.
No. I would rather be in a controlled environment where I’m in control of the conditions of the atmosphere. Live sound is more demanding and 99% problem solving/ There are perks to performing live sound. Such as the ability to try new ideas you don’t see happening in the studios. I also don’t know much about how much the pay rate is.
